News: Independence woman hospitalized after crash caused by suspected drunk driver

KANSAS CITY, MO – A woman is hospitalized with serious injuries following a crash caused by a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 29, WDAF reports.

 

Makayla Rikli of Independence was in a vehicle that was struck on I-29 near the exit for Tiffany Springs Parkway Jan. 9 shortly after 1:30 a.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the crash was caused by a driver who was believed to be driving under the influence and was going in the wrong direction, heading south on I-29 north.

 

Elise Edwards, who was in the car with Rikli after both had left work together, said she swerved to avoid the collision but their car was struck head-on and ended up in the middle of oncoming traffic.

 

According to the report, Rikli has undergone three surgeries since being injured in the crash, and there is no word on how long she will have to remain in the hospital.
