News: 2 injured in collision involving car and semi on US 71 Highway

KANSAS CITY, MO – Police said two people were hospitalized after their car collided with a semi-truck on a Kansas City highway Sunday afternoon.

KSHB reports the incident took place on U.S. 71 Highway at Red Bridge Road shortly before 3 p.m.

An investigation determined that the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro SS was going west on Interstate 470 en route to take the ramp onto southbound U.S. 71 Highway. Police said the Camaro, going at high speed, was weaving in and out of traffic and trying to enter a lane of travel from the exit only lane.

The Camaro hit the right corner trailer guard of a Volvo semi-truck, causing it to spin into the trailer’s side. The car was pulled underneath the truck and was dragged for several feet.

The driver of the Camaro was critically injured while a passenger in the car sustained minor injuries. Both were transported to an area hospital. The truck driver was not hurt.

U.S. 71 Highway was closed for several hours while the scene was being cleared.
