News: 1 dead, 3 critically injured in crash involving speeding driver on U.S. 169

KANSAS CITY, MO – Kansas City police said a speeding driver was involved in a fatal wreck on U.S. 169 Highway Friday morning, according to WDAF.

The driver of a Hyundai Elantra was heading south on the highway shortly before 9 a.m. when the accident occurred near Englewood Road.

An investigation determined that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed, passing cars on the shoulder and splitting the two lanes of travel. The driver then lost control and drove off the left side of the roadway, where the car hit a guardrail and overturned.

The front seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.  The driver and two other passengers were critically injured and transported to area hospitals.

Police said no one in the car was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

U.S. 169 Highway was shut down in both directions for about three hours while the wreck was being cleared and investigated.
