CASS COUNTY, MO – The victim of a fatal car wreck in Freeman, Missouri Sunday morning has been identified by authorities, Fox4KC reported.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said the man killed was 38-year-old Brent Gunnels of Freeman, who was a well-known chef at ‘The W’, a cocktail lounge and eatery in downtown Lee’s Summit.
The crash took place on Missouri Highway 2 east of 263rd Street. State troopers reported that Gunnels, driving a 2007 Subaru, was going westbound at about 2 a.m. when he drove off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle hit an embankment, went airborne, collided with a rock bluff and overturned before coming to rest on its wheels.
Gunnels was pronounced dead later that morning. No other vehicles were involved.
The W paid tribute to Gunnels in a Facebook post on Wednesday that read, “It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of Chef Brent Gunnels, who passed on Sunday in an automotive accident. He was a shining star in the culinary world and a dream to have behind the bar at The W. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts.”
Gunnels previously worked at other restaurants including Il Lazzarone, Clay & Fire, Julep, Tree Haus Cafe and Freshwater.
