News: Truck driver arrested for crash that killed Boone County assistant fire chief

KANSAS CITY, MO – The Missouri State Highway Patrol made an arrest Friday in the case of a fatal crash that occurred in December in Boone County.

According to the Kansas City Star, 65-year-old Kevin Lee Brunson was arrested in Clay County following his indictment earlier this month on a first-degree involuntary manslaughter charge.

The crash occurred December 22, 2021 on westbound Interstate 70 east of Columbia.  Boone County assistant fire chief Bryant Gladney was responding to a truck accident at that location when investigators say a westbound tractor-trailer going at high speed hit Gladney’s vehicle, then struck an ambulance and the truck that was involved in the initial crash.

Gladney was extricated from his vehicle and was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.

State troopers said in their report that Brunson had exceeded the maximum driving time allowed by federal regulations at the time of the crash.  He was booked into the Boone County jail following his arrest.
