News: School bus crash in Clay County injures driver and 2 students

SMITHVILLE, MO – Two students were among three people injured in a school bus accident in Clay County on Monday morning.

According to the St. Joseph Post, the school bus overturned in the area of Mt. Olivet Road and Jami Drive near Smithville just after 8 a.m. About 30 Smithville elementary school students were on board at the time, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.

Two of the children and the driver sustained what were believed to be minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital where they were treated and released. No other vehicles were involved.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, which shut down Mt. Olivet Road in both directions for about three hours.

The sheriff’s office said the bus belongs to DS Bus Lines, the transportation provider for the Smithville School District, and the bus company said it is fully cooperating with the law enforcement investigation while conducting its own internal investigation.
