KANSAS CITY, MO – A Kansas City police officer, a K-9 police dog, and a pedestrian were killed in an accident on Wednesday night, reports KCTV.

The incident took place in the vicinity of Truman Road and Benton Boulevard.  The Kansas City Police Department said Officer James Muhlbauer and his K-9 partner Champ were on patrol in their police vehicle at about 10:15 p.m. when they were struck by a car.  The crash also caused a collision with a pedestrian in the area.

The pedestrian, a man in his 50s, and the police dog were pronounced dead at the scene. Officer Muhlbauer, a 20-year-veteran of the police force, died after being taken to an area hospital.  Champ lived with the officer and his family.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the police car sustained minor injuries and was taken into custody as part of the investigation being conducted by the department’s Traffic Investigation Section.

The police department issued a statement that said, “Please keep the officer’s family, the pedestrian’s family and the whole Kansas CIty, MO, Police Department in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this terrible tragedy.”
