KANSAS CITY, MO – The man charged in a hit-and-run collision that killed a pedestrian in downtown Kansas City has been sentenced to prison, according to the Kansas City Star.
Jackson County Judge Bryan E. Round sentenced 33-year-old Tyler J. Macias of Lenexa to seven years the Missouri Department of Corrections.
The incident occurred Feb. 3 in the area of East 12th Street and Grand Boulevard shorty after 8 p.m. Court documents said a pedestrian, identified as 42-year-old Michael Babbitt, an attorney from Chicago, was walking east to west in the crosswalk when the traffic light changed to red for traffic going north and south.
The driver of a gold four-door sedan went through the intersection, struck Babbitt with the vehicle and sped off, authorities said. Babbitt died after being taken to an area hospital. The damaged sedan was later found parked and abandoned near West 9th Street and Jefferson Street.
An investigation subsequently led police to Macias, who was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. He reportedly told police he had the green light at the time of the accident.
Macias pleaded guilty to the charges last week. He was sentenced to four years in prison on the manslaughter conviction and seven years for leaving the scene of a fatal crash. The judge ordered the sentences to be served concurrently for a total of seven years behind bars.
