KANSAS CITY, MO – An alleged drunk driver has been charged in connection with a crash that injured a Kansas City police officer on Oct. 11, 2025, according to KMBC.
Roman Shumate was charged with felony driving while intoxicated for the incident that happened in the area of Interstate 29 and Northwest Waukomis Drive. Authorities said a police officer driving a marked patrol car pulled over to the left shoulder of I-29 to assist other officers at the scene of a traffic stop in the northbound lanes.
The investigation determined that Shumate, driving a Kia Forte, hit the patrol car from behind as the officer sat inside. Shumate and the officer were transported to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Data from the Kia indicated the car was traveling about 80 to 82 miles per hour prior to the collision in a 55 miles per hour zone. A DUI officer who evaluated Shumate at the hospital noticed signs of impairment, according to court records. His blood alcohol level was found to be nearly three times Missouri’s legal limit, the report said.
He was also allegedly driving with a suspended license.
