News: Head-on collision in Independence leaves suspect dead, officer injured

INDEPENDENCE, MO – A driver attempting to elude police was killed in a crash in Independence early Friday morning, authorities said.

According to a WDAF report,  the incident began at about 5 a.m. when officers tried to stop the driver of a white sedan who was heading south on Interstate 470 and Interstate 70.

When the driver refused to stop and sped away, police set out in pursuit.   Investigators said the driver headed west on I-70, took the exit ramp for U.S. 40 Highway, then made a U-turn and went back up the exit ramp in the wrong direction.

The suspect then crashed head-on into an Independence police car that was attempting to assist the primary officer.   The suspect was killed in the wreck, while an Independence officer was seriously injured.

Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.  There was no word yet on why the sedan was initially being stopped.
