According to WDAF, the incident began when an officer attempted a traffic stop on a Ford Mustang in the area of 41st Street and Prospect Avenue sometime before 11 p.m.

Police said the driver of the Ford disregarded the stop and started to speed away. He lost control of the vehicle, drove off the road and crashed into two wooden utility poles at 43rd Street and Wabash Avenue.

The driver, a 31-year-old Kansas City man, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the car.

The accident also caused a power outage in the area, and a utility crew was dispatched to repair the damage.
