News: Driver seriously injured after crashing into light pole in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, MO – Independence police are investigating a single-vehicle wreck that occurred on M-78 Highway (23rd Street) on Thursday morning.

An Independence Police Department press release states that the crash took place near Norton Avenue at about 7:27 a.m.  Witnesses reported that the driver of a 2016 Buick Encore was traveling eastbound when the car crossed over the center turn lane and entered the westbound lanes of travel.

The Buick then left the roadway and struck a light pole just east of Norton Avenue.    Emergency personnel arrived to find the driver unresponsive.  The person was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Based on the evidence and witness statements, investigators believe the driver may have experienced a medical emergency before the crash.

The investigation is ongoing by the Independence Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit.
