News: Driver dies after train crashes into vehicle on tracks in south Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO – Kansas City police said a driver was killed in a railroad accident that occurred in the Martin City area last week, according to the Kansas City Star.

The incident happened April 15 in the vicinity of Holmes Road near East 134th Street, where a Jaguar S-Type sports sedan was hit by an oncoming train.

Investigators believe the Jaguar driver was heading north on Holmes Road at about 8 a.m., ignored flashing warning lights and audible signals at the railroad tracks, and went around the railroad crossing gate.

The car was then struck by a Union Pacific freight train going north.  The Jaguar driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  The victim, the only occupant of the car, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.  The engineer and conductor of the train were not injured.

Holmes Road was shut down for about four hours during the accident response and investigation.
