News: 18-year-old charged in crash that killed KC police officer, K-9, pedestrian

KANSAS CITY, MO – Authorities announced charges against a driver involved in a fatal accident in Kansas City last week, reports KMBC.

This is an update to a previous story.

18-year-old Jerron Lightfoot of Tonganoxie has been charged with two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter in the case.

The incident took place Wednesday night in the vicinity of Truman Road and Benton Boulevard.  The Kansas City Police Department said Officer James Muhlbauer and his K-9 partner Champ were on patrol in their police vehicle at about 10:15 p.m. when they were struck by a car.  The crash also caused a collision with a pedestrian in the area.

Court documents said Lightfoot was driving the car at up to 89 miles an hour and went through a red light before hitting the police vehicle.  Surveillance video indicated Muhlbauer was driving east at the intersection with a green light when his car was struck.

If convicted on the two charges, Lightfoot could face 20 years in prison.
