INDEPENDENCE, MO – A driver attempting to flee from law enforcement authorities was killed in a crash in Independence early Tuesday morning, according to the Kansas City Star.
The incident began when a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper tried to stop the driver of a Jeep on U.S. Highway 40 at about 2:49 a.m.
The trooper set out in pursuit of the Jeep and Independence police joined in the effort by using stop sticks on South Sterling Avenue near East 23rd Street.
The driver of the Jeep hit the sticks, lost control of the vehicle, and collided with a utility pole, police said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger was hospitalized with injuries that were not disclosed.
Independence police said the driver was suspected of driving while intoxicated and committed multiple lane violations.
The incident shut down 23rd Street between Sterling Avenue and Harvard Avenue while authorities were investigating.
