KANSAS CITY, MO – A man has been charged in connection with a fatal collision in Kansas City earlier this year, Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced.
The incident occurred on Feb. 1 in the area of 43rd Street and The Paseo. Detectives determined that Delton W. Cooper was driving a white Chevy Equinox northbound at a high rate of speed. A westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee entered the intersection, where it was struck by the Chevy. The Jeep overturned and ejected the driver, while the Chevy struck a light pole.
The Jeep driver died several days later at an area hospital.
According to the prosecutor, detectives interviewed Cooper at the scene and he agreed to submit a preliminary breath test, which revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .247.
Cooper has now been charged with one count of Driving While Intoxicated Resulting in Death of Another, which carries five to 15 years in prison if he is convicted.
A Jackson County judge set Cooper’s bond at $75,000.
