News: Man charged in Kansas City hit-and-run that killed postal worker

KANSAS CITY, MO – A man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a U.S. Postal Service worker earlier this year.

According to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson, 24-year-old Calvin L. Boyles faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving while revoked or suspended.

The incident took place May 13 in the area of East 30th Street and Benton Boulevard.  Responding officers observed an unoccupied gray Chevy with heavy passenger and front-end damage and a white Ram mail vehicle on its driver’s side with heavy damage. Officers located the driver of the mail truck dead after being pinned under his vehicle.  He was identified as 35-year-old Gerald Nevels.

Based on surveillance video, detectives determined the mail vehicle was traveling southbound on Benton Boulevard with the right of way and collided with the westbound Chevy on East 30th Street, which failed to stop for a stop sign at Benton Boulevard.  Investigators said that Boyles was captured on video running from the crash.

A Jackson County judge set his bond to $75,000 cash.
