PLATTE COUNTY, MO – A man and a teenager died when their vehicle was involved in a collision in Platte County on Sunday afternoon, according to KMBC.
The accident happened on 92 Highway just east of B Highway between Platte City and Smithville. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office said the 37-year-old driver of a westbound minivan went onto the shoulder of the roadway, overcorrected, crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lanes. The minivan then collided with a Ford Edge, driven by a 67-year-old woman from Platte City.
The man driving the minivan, a resident of Salina, Kansas, and a 14-year-old boy who was his passenger both suffered fatal injuries. Neither was wearing a seat belt, authorities said.
Two other children in the minivan, a 6-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl, were hospitalized. Their conditions were not disclosed. The Ford driver was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the wreck, and said alcohol may have been a factor. Sheriff Mark Owen said the crash served as another reminder of the importance of wearing seat belts.
