KANSAS CITY, MO – An accident near the unincorporated community of Blue Summit claimed the life of a Jackson County Public Works employee who was working on snow removal, WDAF reported.
The victim was identified as 61-year-old Everett Carter, who had served in the county public works department for the past eight years and worked for the county for 40 years.
The incident occurred on Ashland Avenue north of 20th Street on Sunday afternoon at about 4:20 p.m. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Carter was sent to help a Jackson County truck driver who had gotten stuck in the snow. When Carter and another county employee stepped out of their dump truck to help the stranded driver, their truck began to slide on ice.
The vehicle hit Carter and a Honda CRV that was parked on the side of the road. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our entire Jackson County family,” Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. said. “Everett Carter dedicated four decades of his life to serving our community with pride and professionalism. We will forever be grateful for his service and deeply miss his presence. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
County snow removal crews were pulled from operations after the incident but resumed Monday morning.
