News: Girl struck, killed by van while riding her bicycle to Kansas City school

KANSAS CITY, MO – An accident in south Kansas City Tuesday morning claimed the life of a young girl riding a bicycle.

Fox4KC reported details of the fatal crash, which occurred in the area of Longview Road and Food Lane at about 7:15 a.m.  Kansas City police said their initial investigation indicates that the girl was riding her bicycle to Ingels Elementary School and was riding within the crosswalk with a green traffic signal.  At the same time, the driver of a northbound Ford Transit van was turning west onto Longview Road and struck the girl.   The child, who was under the age of 10, died after being transported to an area hospital.

The driver of the van stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.

The Hickman Mills School District released a statement saying, “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the student’s family, friends, and the Ingels Elementary community. Counselors and support staff are available to assist students and staff as they process this tragic loss.”
