INDEPENDENCE, MO – A 5-year-old boy was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Independence on Monday evening.
The Independence Police Department reported that officers responded to the intersection of Truman Road and River Boulevard at about 5:40 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of a 2022 Subaru Ascent was heading west on Truman Road and struck the boy. Police said the child had been walking eastbound along the north sidewalk with a group of other children when he suddenly darted into the roadway.
The boy was rushed to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Based on the investigation and an examination of video evidence, police determined that the Subaru driver did not have an opportunity to avoid the collision.
Authorities said the driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with police.
Investigators are continuing to gather information about the events leading up to the collision, including who was supervising the children before the crash.
