News: 2 motorcycle accidents in Independence leave 1 rider dead, 1 injured

INDEPENDENCE, MO – Two separate motorcycle accidents in Independence last week left one rider dead and another injured, police said.

According to KSHB, both incidents occurred late Thursday night on U.S. 24 westbound near Elsea Smith Road.

In the first crash, the operator of a 2021 Indian motorcycle drove off the roadway at about 11:30 p.m. and struck a utility pole.  The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle witnessed the first accident and tried to stop, but went off the road and crashed.  That motorcyclist was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

An initial investigation by police found excessive speed contributed to both crashes.
