News: 2 Kansas City employees killed in trash truck accident on Interstate 435 ramp

KANSAS CITY, MO – Officials said an accident involving a city garbage truck killed two Kansas City employees on Tuesday morning.

WDAF reports the driver lost control of the truck while going north on the ramp from the Interstate 435 northbound lanes to Front Street, causing the vehicle to hit a barrier, overturn and catch fire.

One worker was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were rushed to an area hospital. One of those employees died later in the day while the other was listed in serious condition.

The ramp was shut down while crews and investigators worked the scene, and drivers were advised to find alternate routes.  Kansas City police are trying to determine the cause of the accident.

City Public Works Director Michael Shaw released a statement that read in part, “I’ve been with the city for 23 years and we’ve never had a fatality like this. It’s just devastating.”
