News: 3 injured in crash involving fleeing driver in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO – Kansas City police said a collision involving a fleeing driver left three people injured late Saturday night.

KCTV reports the incident began when a DUI enforcement officer tried to issue a traffic citation to the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu in the Westport neighborhood shortly before midnight.

Investigators said the driver fled and took off on Pennsylvania Avenue at high speed.  The driver went through a stop sign and struck an eastbound Chrysler 200 at the intersection with Valentine Road.  The Chevrolet driver was not being pursued by police at the time of the crash, the report said.

The Chevrolet driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.  The driver of the Chrysler and a passenger were seriously injured and hospitalized in stable condition.  Both were wearing seat belts.

Investigators are trying to determine whether either of the two drivers were impaired at the time.
