BLUE SPRINGS, M0 – The Independence Police Department released details of a collision on Interstate 70 that killed a teenager on New Year’s night.
The incident began when police attempted a traffic stop for a suspected impaired driver near eastbound Interstate 70 and Little Blue Parkway in Blue Springs at about 8:45 p.m. Officers were trying to stop a 2012 Ford Fusion for several traffic violations.
According to police, the driver of the Fusion began merging towards the shoulder, where the vehicle was nearly struck by an eastbound semi-truck as it was yielding to emergency equipment.
The driver pulled away from the shoulder and continued eastbound, then pulled to the outside shoulder again once the officer was able to get back behind the vehicle.
After coming to a stop, two occupants fled from the Ford Fusion on foot. One of them fled across several lanes of traffic and was struck and killed by a westbound vehicle.
The victim was a 17-year-old from Oak Grove, according to the Kansas City Star. Independence police said officers never engaged in a pursuit with the Fusion.
