PLATTE COUNTY, MO – Authorities said a woman was killed in an accident in Platte County last week after getting out of her car following a previous crash, the Kansas City Star reported.
The Platte County Sheriff’s Office said the initial accident happened on Interstate 435 near Missouri 45 highway on Dec. 22 shortly before 6:30 a.m., leaving one of the vehicles disabled in the right lane. The driver of the other vehicle stopped at first but left the scene before information could be exchanged and deputies arrived.
The driver of the disabled car, a 56-year-old woman from Kansas City, Kansas, exited the vehicle to notify her family she had been involved in a hit-and-run crash. At that point a third vehicle hit her car, which then struck and killed the woman.
The driver of the third car remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. The incident shut down I-435 north for several hours. Sheriff’s deputies were reported to be gathering information to try and identify the hit-and-run driver and their vehicle.
