News: Police identify victim of multi-vehicle wreck as Kansas City woman

KANSAS CITY, MO – Police have released the identity of a woman killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Kansas City earlier this month.

According to a KMBC report, the victim was 42-year-old LaShan Townsend-Gunnels of Kansas City.

The accident happened June 7 in the vicinity of Troost Avenue and 83rd Terrace at about 7:49 a.m.

Police said the driver of a Chevy Silverado was headed north on Troost Avenue at a high rate of speed and swerved to get around a Honda making a turn.  The Chevy driver locked up his brakes, drove into southbound traffic on Troost and crashed into a GMC Terrain driven by Townsend-Gunnels at the intersection with 83rd Terrace.

The impact sent the GMC into a metal utility pole, while the Chevy flipped onto its side.  Kansas City police said Townsend-Gunnels was pronounced dead at Research Hospital late Friday night. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.

The driver of the Chevy was seriously injured in the wreck and was hospitalized.
