News: Independence girl, 7, dies after car accident blamed on pothole

KANSAS CITY, MO – A young girl has died of injuries suffered in a car accident in Kansas City on Monday afternoon, WDAF reports.

Two vehicles collided in the vicinity of Stark Avenue and East 23rd Street Trafficway at about 4:50 p.m.

An investigation determined that the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban drove off the road while headed east on 23rd Street Trafficway.  When the driver overcorrected, the Suburban slid across the median and was hit by a westbound Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The driver of the Ford, the driver of the Suburban, and Suburban driver’s 7-year-old daughter were all taken to area hospitals in critical condition, and the girl was pronounced dead Thursday morning.

Her family members told WDAF that the crash was the result of a large pothole in the road.  They said the Suburban driver hit the pothole, overcorrected, crossed the median, and was hit broadside by the Ford.

Road crews were seen working to fill the pothole on Thursday, according to the report.
