News: 3 dead, 6 injured in collision involving stolen car in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, MO – Three people died in a crash involving a stolen car in Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

A report by KCTV states that the incident began when a police officer pulled over the driver of a Kia Soul for a traffic violation at Cleveland Avenue and 31st Street.

Police said the Kia driver sped away when the officer got out of his car.    The officer, who did not pursue the car, saw that the license plates indicated it to be a stolen vehicle.

The Kia driver took off going east on 35th Street at a high rate of speed and approached a Chevy Tahoe in the same lane that was slowing down to make a left turn onto Norton Avenue.  The Kia driver pulled into the westbound lanes to pass the Chevy as that driver was starting to make the turn, and the two vehicles collided at about 5 p.m.  The Chevy spun and ended up south on Norton Avenue, while the Kia, which had eight occupants, struck a large utility pole and overturned.

The 16-year-old male driver of the Kia and a 37-year-old male passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, while a female passenger died after being taken to an area hospital.  Five other passengers suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, a 20-year-old man and four children, ages 13, 12, 6 and 4.  The driver of the Chevy was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Kansas City police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
