KANSAS CITY, MO – Two drivers were injured in a head-on collision in Kansas City on Friday night, according to police.

WDAF reports the accident happened on U.S. 71 Highway north near East 53rd Street shortly before 8 p.m.

Kansas City police said the driver of a Jeep Cherokee was going south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 71 shortly before 8 p.m.  The driver of a northbound Nissan Sentra pulled to the right to avoid hitting the Jeep, hit a guardrail, and then struck the Jeep.  The Jeep driver was reported to have exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, but was later apprehended.

The two drivers were seriously injured and transported to area hospitals.  Police said neither driver was wearing a seat belt.
